EXTON, PA, April 25, 2012—Physiotherapy Associates, the nation’s foremost provider of outpatient physical therapy services, announced today that Kevin Wilk, PT, DPT, has been named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Dr. Wilk is the VP & National Director of Clinical Education Research for Physiotherapy Associates, currently working out of Champion Sports Medicine; a wholly owned Physiotherapy Associates subsidiary; in Birmingham, Alabama.
APTA is the leading professional organization for the physical therapy field, representing more than 80,000 members nationwide. The Catherine Worthingham Fellow designation is the highest honor among the APTA’s members, and Kevin will be joining an elite class of only 135 who have received this honor.
Catherine Worthingham, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was a change agent who was effective, respectful, and honest, and motivated others to make an impact within the physical therapy profession. She was also a visionary who demonstrated leadership across the domains of advocacy, education, practice, and research. The purpose of the Catherine Worthingham Fellow designation (FAPTA) is to honor Dr. Worthingham and inspire all physical therapists to attain the high level of professional excellence and impact in terms of advancing the profession she exemplified. In order to be eligible for the Catherine Worthingham Fellow designation the physical therapist must: be a member of the association, make contributions to the profession through leadership, influence, and achievements, and demonstrate frequent and sustained efforts to advance the profession for a period of no less than 15 years preceding the nomination.
Dr. Kevin Wilk has not only met these qualifications, but has exceeded them. Kevin has lead a distinguished career as a clinical physical therapist, researcher and educator for over 29 years. He has made significant contributions to laboratory research, bio-mechanical research and clinical outcome studies and is recognized as a leading authority in rehabilitation of sports injuries and orthopaedic lesions.
Kevin, who received his PT degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL., and his DPT degree from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of HealthCare Professions in Boston, MA, is currently the National Director of Education for Physiotherapy Associates and the Director of Rehabilitative Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute. In addition, his professional career has included: Associate Clinical Director for Champion Sports Medicine (a Physiotherapy Facility) in Birmingham, AL; Rehabilitation Consultant for the Tampa Bay Rays’ Baseball Team; president of the sports section of the APATA; Education Program Chairman and Editor of the Home Study Course for the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the APTA; publisher of over 125 journal articles and over 75 book chapters; he has lectured at over 400 professional and scientific meetings and is on the review boards of 7 journals. Kevin was also the first non-physician named to a committee for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
Kevin is a clinician, researcher, and educator and is generally regarded as one of the leading sports physical therapists experts in the evaluation and treatment of shoulder, knee, and elbow joint injuries. He is active daily with patient care, research & educational activities and is now a proud recipient of the Catherine Worthingham fellow.
